Small container, big impact:
A project to conserve resources.
Less material, lower weight, optimised logistics: the redesign of a private label tub for herb quark proves that even established packaging solutions offer potential for optimisation.
The redesign of the container, a joint project between the DMK Group and packaging manufacturer Pöppelmann FAMAC®, has enabled significant resource savings to be made, contributing to greater climate protection.
Two companies, one common goal - more resource conservation.
The joint project proves that even with long-established packaging solutions such as the classic quark pot, there is always room for improvement.
DMK took the first step some time ago by removing the conventional snap-on lids from the tubs of selected quark products. This has already saved a considerable amount of plastic.
In a recent project, the dairy products manufacturer went one step further. The aim was to optimise the material usage of the injection-moulded cup to save even more plastic.

- 20 % weight saving thanks to reinforced longitudinal ribs: less material means less weight, which in turn means less greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during transport, improving logistics in terms of environmental impact.
- Approximately 20% of greenhouse gas emissions were saved (18.4 instead of 23.09 kg CO2eq/1,000 cups) due to the reduction in material.
- The ribbed structure is so discreet that it allows the quark pot to be emptied easily while maintaining the attractive appearance of the pack.
- Using the In-Mould-Labelling process, the container is provided with a pre-printed plastic label during production.
- Container dimensions have been adjusted to make better use of pallets. The stacking distance between the containers is now smaller. This optimises storage and transport processes and also has benefits on the filling line. The cup magazines now hold more packaging and require less manual refilling.
- As a result, the redesigned cup saves space on pallets and trucks en route to food retailers: instead of 8,736 cups, 13,440 now fit into a transport box. This reduces the number of boxes needed each year by around 35%, which in turn reduces transport.
- To make it easy to recycle the packaging after use, the container and label are made from the same basic material.
This is how we practise responsibility within the Pöppelmann group:
Sustainable management has been a fundamental factor in our success for decades. The long-term added value of our actions lies at the heart of all of our decisions. This attitude is best described by the notion of "responsibility". We assume this responsibility every day anew – for our employees and the quality of our products, for the natural resources of our planet and for the region which we call home.
We do it. Better.
In joint responsibility for tomorrow.
Thinking ecologically.
Acting economically.
Acting ecologically.
